Comparison of Screening Attenuation Test Methods for RF Coaxial Cable

 

With the development of electronics, information and communication technology, RF coaxial cables, as a kind of transmission line, are more and more widely applied to communication network system. Cables themselves don’t actively interfere to the environment around. However, with the higher frequent usage, cable’s EMC has been a big problem.

 

The RF coaxial cable’s EMC is evaluated with screening attenuation. Screening Attenuation means a physical property measured in dB, which describes by how much electromagnetic energy will be attenuated when it penetrates through the shield of a cable, a connector backshell, an open seam, etc. .The screening attenuation of coaxial cables can also be described by surface transfer impedance.

 

The commonly used methods to measure surface transfer impedance of RF coaxial cables are triaxial method. And methods to measure screening attenuation of cables are absorbing clamp method, reverberation chamber method and GTEM cell method. This paper presented the typical testing methods of RF coaxial cable’s screening attenuation, and a comparison between them is made.
