Detection of Restricted Substances in RoHS

The directive “The Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous substances in Electrical and Electronic EquipmentEU Directive 2002/95/ECwas executed from July 1st, 2006, RoHS directive prohibits the sales of the products that such six hazardous substances as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated benzene (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) exceed the maximum limited amount value, according to the international and domestic relative detection standards such as IEC62321, SJ/T11365-2006, recently our Inspection and Testing Center purchased the detection equipment for RoHS analysis, including the equipment for pre-treating sample, and officially starts to carry out the quantitative analysis of RoHS restricted substances.

According to the difference of sample’s properties and analyzed elements, referring to the standard the pre-treatment of the sample and the analysis of the measured elements are carried out. The ICP Varian 710ES seriesour Inspection and Testing Center owns has better analysis capability, faster analysis speed, lower detectable limit, and wider dynamic linear range. Besides the substances that RoHS restricts ICP can be used to detect other 69 kinds of elements.

 

The Precise Analysis of Cr6+

 

Referring to international and domestic standards the analysis of Cr6+ can utilize the fact that diphenyl carbazide does not react with Cr3+ and only react with Cr6+ to form complex, which exhibits the absorption curve of the characteristic peak at 540nm (claret), then Cr6+ is selectively analyzed using UV Vis Spectrophotometer. The UV-Cary50 instrument of our Inspection and Testing Center achieves a wide wavelength range of 190-1100 nm, and has extremely wide linear range of luminosity.

The Precise Analysis of PBB, PBDE

 

PBBs and PBDEs as effective fire-retardants are widely used in the production of various products, have great hazard on environment and human body, either PBBs or PBDEs has 209 kinds of homolog, so in order to implement the analysis of these substances it is necessary to raise very high requirement on the analysis instrument. The Varian 240 GC/MS/MS Gas Mass Spectrometer that our Inspection and Testing Center owns utilizes the different mass spectrometric fragment peaks which are produced in the mass spectrometer at different retention time and from different substances to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis, the secondary mass spectrometric analysis will eliminate background interference, lower the detectable limit, and make the results more accurate. In addition GC/MS/MS Analyzer is also able to detect other restricted substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) , polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), and azo compound and phthalate ester plasticizer.
